Nostalgic number 47

My sister and I were latchkey kids and spent a lot of time in front of the TV watching cartoons, eating candy and assorted crap. We both have the teeth to prove it.

Oh, what’s a few cavitites, when you have all those memories? For my latest piece of art, I went nostalgic and tried to capture some of the iconic images from shows I actually watched. I’m pretty happy with the results, although I always zoom in on the flaws.

My sister, noted junk food authority, loved the Ding Dong but said that doesn’t look like any Twinkie she ever saw. The so-called Twinkie is on the left, just to the right of Fred.

Also, this is reclaimed wood, and I think it was maple. Some parts were darker than others, and the colors didn’t always turn out as I expected. I won’t tell you what it’s supposed to be, but the circular item also to the right of Fred came out too dark. My sister knew right away what it was. That’s probably because she knows I’m a sucker for compressed dextrose.

At first, I was worried about trademark issues, but I read it’s OK as long as you don’t try to sell them. I’m good there.

See what you think. Maybe it will stir up some fun memories of your own.

Number 47.

  1. I love #47! The cartoon characters are so cute, especially Fred. I see a Twinkie, candy necklace, candy corn and a Ding Dong or Hostess cupcake? Hey Donna, my friend gave me some sourdough starter and now I have no excuse to not make bread. What kind of flour do you use, and do you have any favorite YouTube bakers you follow?

    1. Thank you! It’s a Ding Dong. The Hostess cupcake has that white squiggle over the top, but you knew that. And yes, you got the candy necklace. Yay.

This is my best source for sourdough. She has lots of videos, too. I use King Arthur bread flour.

Come back for more information when your starter is giving you fits. I have other resources for that! Hopefully, that won’t happen anytime soon.

      1. Thanks Donna, I found the site and I’m watching her videos now. I’ve heard that King Arthur’s bread flour is good because it has more protein.

    2. I’m not seeing the link I posted. The site is foodbodsourdough. Add the https to the front and the .com to the end. I’ll have to figure out why this isn’t working.

  2. Oh my gosh, I think my teeth had a visceral reaction just looking at that candy! I love the spirit in your artwork and this one brings back memories of me sitting about 2 inches from the TV for endless hours.

  3. Ahhh, Top Cat. Loved him.
BTW, Coyotes run more than twice the speed of roadrunners. We were lied to.

    1. Top Cat — the indisputable leader of the gang! Can’t stop singing that song since I did this. He’s the boss. He’s the pip. He’s the championship.

Thanks for the update on coyotes. But the show was still good, right?

  4. Love the cartoon characters which brought back all the childhood feels 🙂 And I’ve also got the Top Cat song running through my head now. Not that I’m complaining – we need that level of silliness and bounce in our daily life.

    1. I just remembered the show as Rocky and Bullwinkle. I didn’t know Rocket J. Squirrel was his full name! The people who made cartoons were wonderfully clever. Now I’m thinking I might have to do something with Alfred E. Neuman. Might be pretty difficult, though.

    2. I definitely remember Rocket J. Squirrel. My sister had a Halloween mask of him when I was in 6th grade, so probably 1968.

  5. This is great!! I remember everything, except I’m not sure who the cat is in the garbage can. Rocky and Bullwinkle were definitely favorites. You could have also included Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman. Loved fractured fairy tales. You do such great work. Too bad you can’t sell it.

    1. I forgot about Fractured Fairy Tales! Another favorite. The cat in the garbage can is Top Cat.
