Abby Normal

I’m almost scared to say it in my outside voice, but it seems like we are returning to what passes for normal at our house. Well, Abby Normal.

My shoulder is not quite what it was before I fell and broke my proximal humerus, but it’s getting close. Dale’s torn ACL is pretty much healed, and he is walking without a walker. Now that we have three of them, uh, no longer needed.

Since he fell off a ladder and broke his pelvis last December, and then my accident and then the second fall that tore his ACL, I was beginning to wonder if someone gave God a cattle prod for Christmas, and he decided to try it out on us. Maybe the batteries wore out, because we are on the mend.

I’m excited about Thanksgiving, even though it’s a ways away. I think of it as that brief respite before the shit hit the fan. When we were innocent and didn’t know how badly our bodies could crap out.

But before then, we are taking a little road trip to Morro Bay to celebrate being ambulatory. We love it there, and it will be a nice reward for making it this far. I am the travel planner, and I have made a vow to put more effort into occasional road trips. We need some fun back in our lives.

And holy halleluiah the cool weather has finally arrived. I started my list of all the “fall foods” we like to make. Today and tomorrow I’m making decorated Day of the Dead cookies. I baked the cookies today and will decorate them tomorrow. I’m done with cookies for the day, so tonight it will be easy-to-make bison tacos, one of Dale’s favorites.

Tomorrow is unknown, as I will be decorating cookies. Dale is in charge of dinner. I usually play golf on Mondays, but this week I’m not, and I don’t even think it will reach 70 degrees, so I’m thinking stuffed cabbage rolls with homemade rye bread or beef stroganoff.

Speaking of bread, I killed my sourdough starter. His name was Gollum, because for good or evil, he had a part to play. I put him in his keeper, which I thought was set at 45 degrees, but I forgot to make the adjustment, and it was set at 78 degrees. He sat in there for a week with no food and got moldy. It was a tragic ending.

After taking a short siesta, I am now working on a new batch of starter. I’m on day four, and my new fella is looking quite good. I haven’t decided on a name for him yet. One of the contenders is Samwise. A good and faithful friend. I mean, that’s optimistic, but I’m feeling frisky. I also wondered if maybe he is a she. Not sure how I will know, but if it should come to pass, I will probably go with Arwen. Also faithful and devoted. And beautiful!

Now that I’m feeling calmer and generally more positive, I hope to write more frequently. I realize that’s not a high bar, but I’m ready for the challenge.

  1. Donna,
Always enjoy your posts and insights. Hope you and hubs both continue to improve. As many before us have said, getting Old isn’t for sissies. It certain comes with its challenges. If we are lucky (and have done our part) to stay reasonably healthy, we can fair better than average. Our motto is to keep doing (and going) as much as we can for as long as we can, as well as we can.
Due to family circumstances which have changed, our snowbird/travel wings have been severely clipped for the time being. While we are glad that we can help out and do what needs to be done for now, we still feel that it is helpful to have something fun and different to look forward to. I call it NEXTING…😂
With that in mind we have made plans for a few shorter adventures during the next year, to be taken provided things work out. If not, then plan B, but in the meantime, we’ll enjoy planning and anticipating from now until then.
